Biomass Supply Chain Investment Fund

EECA is introducing a new Biomass Supply Chain Investment Fund to provide financial and other support to organisations to help enable investment in the supply of renewable biomass for use as a fuel.

As a first step, we are inviting registrations of interest (ROI) for potential biomass supply chain projects, in the South Island, that will specifically enable additional residue collection from harvested forests for conversion into boiler-ready fuel.

The Biomass Supply Chain Investment Fund

The Biomass Supply Chain Investment Fund is part of the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry (GIDI) Fund and is open for businesses and public sector organisations.

EECA’s work with regions across the South Island through the Regional Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) programme identified that a mix of biomass and electricity will be required as businesses undertake valuable decarbonisation projects.

The new fund aims to enable the decarbonisation of local energy use by addressing two key biomass supply chain barriers identified through the RETA works carried out to date. The need for:

  • Increased recovery, collection, preparation, and processing of raw biomass.

  • Increased production of boiler-ready fuel (e.g. hog fuel, dry chips, briquettes, and white pellets).

Demand for biomass is growing

The future of our economy is low emissions. Moving off fossil fuels is increasingly critical for industrial businesses wanting to future proof from both a sustainability and a financial perspective. Biomass will help accelerate the transition to clean energy and clever technologies, and demand for the renewable fuel source is growing rapidly.

Increasing the availability of renewable biomass will remove barriers and increase process heat user confidence to move away from fossil fuels faster where biomass is the best choice for the end user.

Co-benefits for investing in biomass supply systems include increased recovery of forestry residues, higher returns and investment in the forestry industry, and market growth in low emission fuels.
