Meeting with Minister Nash – Response to ETS Proposals
Representatives from Ngā Pou a Tāne met with Minister of Forestry Stuart Nash, Minister Meka Whaitiri (Zoom), Tamati Coffey – Labour List MP, Jason Wilson – DDG Te Uru Rakau, and senior officials from MPI, Te Uru Rakau and Ministry for the Environment.
The topics covered in some detail included:
Partnership – including co-governance and design, and our offer to work with Te Uru Rākau in formulating policy and so forth.
Timeframes – compressed and rushed with little in the way of true engagement. Also directed attention to likely breaches with Te Tiriti, CCRA, and Te Arawhiti guidelines.
Specific Items in the Proposal Document:
Remove Exotics from Permanent Category – Don’t support this.
Rotation Forests – want to see more options on rotation length.
Indigenous Afforestation – support this and “desperately” want to understand how this will become economically viable.
This was a very positive meeting, and we were pleased to have the opportunity to voice our concerns and have them acknowledged, it was also pleasing to have two of the Māori caucus in the conversation. We will continue to proactively advance favourable and equitable outcomes for Māori, this includes connecting with other Māori led groups to participate in more conversations with various Ministers in the coming months.
