Establishment of first National Māori Forestry Association
This month marked a significant milestone for Māori in Forestry with the establishment of the first National Māori Forestry Association – Ngā Pou a Tāne.
An interim board, of nine members, has been established with a purpose to provide a strong, mandated, collective Māori voice, to engage with the Crown and influence key policy decisions on all matters relating to forestry and whenua Māori. We, as Māori foresters, are currently facing a number of legislative policies and regulations that negatively impact how we utilise our whenua. A key aim of this organsiation is to obviate any of negative impacts for Māori in Forestry.
