Close-to-Nature Continuous Cover Forestry for Aotearoa New Zealand wānanga/web-based workshops
A new collaboration between The Connective, Ngā Pou a Tāne, Scion (New Zealand Forest Research Institute), Tāne’s Tree Trust and Te Uru Rākau New Zealand Forest Service to develop recommendations towards business models for close-to-nature continuous cover forestry (CCF) in Aotearoa New Zealand. CDF is a sustainable forestry management approach to prioritise the wider non-timber benefits of forests. It is a primary method of forestry pursued in many other parts of the world.
The project is being funded under the Forestry & Wood Processing Industry Transformation Plan to complete implementation towards ITP action 7.1. Read more about Objective 7 of the plan here.
The business model recommendations will apply to:
Productive exotic alternatives to Pinus radiata.
Both productive and non-productive native CCF.
Mixed-species CCF.
The conversion of Pine Forests to CCF.
Through the project, a diverse practitioner network will be engaged through the online wānanga to feed in practical knowledge on New Zealand’s current CCF forestry landscape, consider international research for the New Zealand context, and give feedback on CCF-related policy recommendations, initiatives, and high-priority CCF business models for New Zealand. These sessions will be recorded and shared in due course.
The joint hope is that this project leads to deeper connections and collective knowledge of how to address systemic barriers and enablers to realise the benefits of CCF at greater scale in New Zealand.
What good looks like for Māori landowners: Holistic land management is a key enabler of this type of forestry. So, as members of Ngā Pou a Tāne – Māori landowners have the potential to work collaboratively with the findings of this project to form cooperatives, innovate, and lead in this area of New Zealand forestry. To do this our priority is to develop enabling policy that supports tikanga informed holistic tools, practice, and instruments for native forests, and use this to accelerate the scaling (within carefully determined ecological limits) of CCF value chains across whenua Māori. This will support the emergence of regionally based living forest economies.
