Feedback to “Tū Mai Rā! te Whānau o Tāne” - views on a national Māori forestry strategy.

Over thirty organisations from the Ngā Kōrero Rangatira Mō Ngā Hua Ngahere 2023 focus group gave feedback on the 53-page consultation document on the National Māori Forestry Strategy 2040 produced by Ngā Pou a Tāne for its members and affiliates. Consultation took place between 20 February and 20 March 2024.

The findings show great promise and hope for uniting to realise the rights, interests, and responsibilities of Māori in forests - and of course, there were a few reality checks!

”I’m excited to see our ngahere brought into focus. This is what we are interested in.”

”These are big numbers that won’t make much sense to the small trusts, like winning Lotto, but you would be preaching to converted if your audience were the trusts that own and are utilising their forests to drive economic value.”

”Let’s think about what we can do tactically to make this strategy move - so that’s a part of the whakaaro going forward. Prioritise. So, bringing ourselves together to socialise this kaupapa to think about what we can do on our own at this stage. Building the inspiration amongst ourselves.”

”There’s a lot of side shows going on that we need to tidy up first.”

”I don’t want us to wait, we know where we’re going. Let’s look at the here and now, while we have that long term view in the background.”
