He currently holds the position of Strategic Relations Manager Walking Access Commission. In his most recent position, Doug was the Principal Advisor Māori Te Uru Rakau for the NZ Forest Service and was responsible for guiding the building of relationships with Māori across TUR and MPI, driving Internal capability development relative to te Ao Maori, guiding policy advice to the minister regarding Māori land and aspirations and scoping out Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities.
Doug has previously held the following positions:
Sector Capability Manager and Maori Agri-Business Manager for Beef and Lamb New Zealand
Responsible for all relationships with Tangata Whenua sheep and beef farm owners, trustees and stakeholders working closely with Māori farmers and landowners on projects including:
Led Federation of Māori Authorities agribusiness performance contract as well as the National Māori Agribusiness Quantification Project.
Was the Sheep and Beef member on the Primary ITO Industry Partnership Group.
Scoped the formation of the King Country Sheep and Beef Collective
Beef and Lamb Rep on the Ahuwhenua Maori Farming Excellence Management Committee.
Led (with Te Tumu Paeroa) the Young Māori Farmer Competition initiative.
Contributed to Forests on Farm initiative
Sector Capability Advisor for the Red Meat Profit Partnership.
Primary ITO leading Te Kauta
A Māori Training Solutions team creating partnerships with large Māori employers designing and implementing capability development programs.
HR Mangager for CNI Forest Management
New Zealand’s largest Silviculture Contractor employing up to 300 forestry workers within the Central North Islands Kaingaroa forest. Nearly 100% Māori workers – led training programs for all aspects of forestry establishment.
Māori Partnerships Manager Scion Research
Identified research priorities for Maori and established and managed partnered projects. Led the radiata pine genetic tree trial which was tikanga mandated by Ngati Hurunga o Te Rangi. Developed the Manawhenua partnership with Scion Executive and Science Team leaders.
Administration Manager for Forestry Corporation
Responsible for public and commercial recreational forest activities and access within the Kaingaroa, Whakarewrewa and Rotoehu forests. Led the establishment of the Whaka Forest Mountain bike track system. Set up the track system that generates 40 million dollars of revenue into the Rotorua economy annually. Led restoration of the Central North Island plantation forestry recreation estate.
